Fox Mulder

Special Agent Fox Mulder - A Biography

The Early Years

Agent Fox William Mulder was born on the 13th of October 1961 in Massachusetts, New England, USA to William (Bill) and Teena Mulder. When he was four years old his sister Samantha was born. Mulder and his family spent their summers at a cabin in Rhode Island, there his father and C.G.B. Spender (Cancer Man) would go water skiing together on the lake. During his childhood Fox would wake up from nightmares feeling like he was the only person left in the world, it was the sound of his father crunching on sunflower seeds that reassured him he was, in fact, not alone. He developed his hatred of insects when he was a child after being frightened by a praying mantis while climbing a tree. Fox also developed a mortal fear of fire when his best friends house burned down and they had to stay up all night guarding the rubble against looters. Mulder later confronted this fear when investigating the case his old friend Phoebe Green brought to him from England. He used to dress up as Spock from Star Trek as a child and his father recorded videos of him playing with Samanatha.

Samantha's Disappearance

On the night of the 27th of November 1973 Fox's sister Samantha was abducted from their family home. Their parents has gone to a neighbours house and Fox was babysitting. Fox was only twelve at the time and Samantha was eight. He and Samantha were playing the board game Stratego and arguing over who got to watch what on TV. Suddenly the electrics went off, the house began to shake and a blinding bright light shone through the edges of the front door. Mulder remembers Samantha floating out the window and disappearing in a bright light.

For months afterwards Mulder would put up fliers all over his neighbourhood, he would also close his eyes before entering his room. He did this in the hopes that one day he would open them to see Samantha there. It was Mulder's belief that Samantha had been taken by aliens that drove him to investigate The X Files, hoping to find answers within them. He even opened a file for his sister numbered, X-40253.

In 1989, Mulder underwent hypnotic regression to try and obtain a clearer memory of what happened the night Samantha was taken. The memories he uncovered at that session were later brought into to question by Special Agent Lewis Schoniger. He believed that Mulder had created these memories to alleviate his guilt over not being able to prevent Samantha's abduction.

In 1997, Mulder had a dream that lead him to the body of victim number fourteen of a serial killer of children, John Lee Roche, who had been active the area where they lived when Samantha was taken. Roche implied that Samantha may have been one of his victims and tried to get Mulder to have him released. He told Mulder he had sold his father a hoover, Mulder later found the hoover in his mother's house. Roche used to take a heart shaped cutting of the night clothes girls were wearing and he had two unclaimed ones left. Mulder tried to get his mother to remember if Samantha had clothes like either heart, but she wasn't able to. Roche escaped from prison and kidnapped a young girl, to save the girl Mulder shot and killed Roche. So it was never clear if Roche had killed Samantha or not. But but it seemed unlikely faced with future events.

In 2000, Mulder believed he had finally found closure over what happened to Samantha. He was contacted by a psychic named Harold Piller, while investigating the case of a girl who apparently disappeared without a trace. Piller believed in a phenomenon where children who would suffer a painful life were taken by angel type creatures, called 'walk-ins'. Mulder later saw an apparition of Samantha at age fourteen. Samantha had been treated in hospital from the effects of brutal tests that had been performed on her. She would only let one nurse touch her, Nurse Ray and she told Mulder that Samantha had disappeared from her room before the men who came to take her could get to her.

In 2002, Jeffrey Spender said that Mulder's memories were in fact true and that Samantha had been returned and taken many times and had been raised with Jeffrey in California. She underwent horrific tests each time and eventually died in 1987, at age 22.

Education at Oxford and Joining the FBI

Mulder attended the University of Oxford in Oxford, England from 1983 until 1986, he graduated with a first degree honours BA in Psychology. It was while at Oxford that he got to know and went out with Phoebe Green, who later became an Inspector at Scotland Yard in London, England. Mulder claimed it took him ten years to forget her and she knew exactly what the affect of a case involving fire would do to him. Mulder joined the FBI after returning home from England. He first trained with the Investigative Support Unit (ISU) after graduating from Quantico (FBI training academy), under Bill Patterson. He and Scully later worked with Bill Patterson on a gruesome serial killer case. After chasing monsters for so long Patterson eventually became one himself. In 1988 the FBI captured Monty Props thanks to help from the paper Mulder had written at Oxford entitled "Serial Killers and the Occult".

In 1988 Mulder was assigned to the Violent Crimes Section. It was while working here that he was part of a task force set up to pursue and capture John Barnett, it was Mulder's hunch that he had an inside man helping with his robberies that led to a trap being set to capture him. Unfortunately Mulder underestimated Barnett's desire to not be caught and didn't take the shot to kill him when he had the chance. This choice to stick to FBI protocol cost the life of Barnett's partner and an FBI Agent. Mulder has never forgiven himself for that decision.

Mulder first met The Lone Gunmen in 1989 while working on the case of Suzanne Modeski. Modeski had been working for a high level chemical weapons lab and had fled with evidence that the government was conducting experiments on the public to test these chemical agents. Mulder ended up being incapacitated by these chemicals and once he had recovered he became suspicious of the government and it's intentions.

The X Files

Mulder discovered The X Files in 1990, he read everything he could find in the FBI files on the paranormal, the occult and alien abductions. In 1993, Agent Scully was assigned to work with Mulder on The X Files, for seven years they worked together on all manner of cases while trying to uncover the massive conspiracy involving the Syndicate and extra-terrestrials. Scully became Mulder's friend and ally over this time.

During their years on The X Files Mulder and Scully uncovered, a piece at a time, the puzzle of what exactly the aliens wanted and what role the Syndicate played. They learned that the aliens intended to colonise Earth an that the date at been set for this event, 2012. They planned to infect the population through the black oil that carried the alien virus. The Syndicate had developed a vaccine to counter act this virus in secret from the aliens. They used the alien embryo they had been given to develop an alien/human hybrid by the aliens to do this. They succeeded in creating the first alien/human hybrid (Cassandra Spender), which would be immune to the alien colonisation, once they had successfully achieved this they would show it to the colonists and their families would be made hybrids too in order to survive colonisation. This was the deal they made with the alien colonists in 1973. Cassandra asked Mulder to kill her as she knew that once it was revealed to the alien colonists that she existed, colonisation would begin.

Cassandra was killed along with the Syndicate by the alien rebels, a group of different aliens who were trying to stop colonisation. They set a trap for them where they believed they were meeting the colonists to show them Cassandra. They also were aware that if the colonists knew about Cassandra they would begin colonisation. They had also killed other groups of alien abductees in hopes of desiccating the alien colonists test groups.

The Syndicate and alien colonists also developed the virus to be transmitted through bees who collected infected pollen and then when they stung people they became infected with the virus. As a result of this infection the person would become an incubation chamber for the alien, eventually all the body's matter would be consumed and the alien would burst forth. This violent newborn would then develop into the better known grey aliens.

After seven years investigating The X Files, Mulder himself was abducted and disappeared. A task force was set up to find him but they had little success. After over a year Mulder returned apparently dead. However, Scully and Doggett discovered that other abductees who had returned later came back to life and so Scully had Mulder exhumed three months after his burial. Mulder recovered and after seeing William, his son, he had to go into hiding as he was being pursued by the conspiracy. He returned again after nearly two years and he was on trial for the murder of Nowle Rohrer. However, Rohrer could not be dead as he was a replicant, a super soldier alien with a skeletal structure made of metal. The replicants can regenerate even if the bones have been separated. Mulder was represented by ADA Skinner at his trial. Mulder was sentenced to death and to avoid that Skinner, Scully, Doggett, Reyes and ADA Kersch all helped him to escape. He and Scully went on the run together to keep from being killed.

Family

Immediate Family

Mulder's father had worked for the state department and had become involved with the Syndicate and had apparently known Cancer Man for a number of years. Mulder's mother told him she couldn't choose between him and his sister when her husband asked. So William Mulder made the choice to give up Samantha as all the members had to give a family member as sign of good faith in their deal with the aliens. After Samantha abduction the family was torn apart, Teena Mulder had already said she hated William for his decision to give up Samantha and they eventually divorced.

In 1994, William Mulder was murdered by Krycek to prevent him telling Mulder the full truth of his involvement with the deal the Syndicate made. Teena Mulder committed suicide in 1999 after she was diagnosed with a terminal disease, which would cause her to suffer immensely toward the end. It implied throughout The X Files that Teena had an affair with Cancer Man and that Mulder may in fact be his son. This was never made a hundred percent clear.

His Son - William

It remains unclear as to how exactly Scully became pregnant but it is known that Mulder is the father. After Mulder found Scully's ova frozen in a lab she decided to use invitro fertilization to have a baby. She asked Mulder to be the father. However, the procedure apparently didn't succeed. Mulder told her not to give up hope of it working and it later seemed that they had sex and so maybe this was the cause of her pregnancy it is unclear either way. While Scully was pregnant with William there were several groups after them. The Syndicate wanted him and a cult who believed he should be sacrificed also pursued her. William was born in 2001 in Georgia, Reyes helped with the birth. Scully told Mulder she named William after his father. (Although Scully's father had the same name). When he first saw William Mulder joked that he had Scully's colouring but looked suspiciously like ADA Skinner. Mulder didn't get the chance to have much time with his son since he had to go into hiding shortly after seeing him. Scully gave William up for adoption as she believed it was the safest thing for him.
